Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (Jaw Pain)

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint)  is a joint formed by your skull and your jaw bone and involves the muscles needed for chewing. Pain or discomfort in this area may also be referred to as a temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. TMJ pain can be extremely debilitating and physiotherapy is the first line of treatment for TMJ pain.

Common signs of discomfort are popping, clicking, muscle tenderness, joint tenderness, or not being able to open your jaw as wide as possible. TMJ symptoms can be mild to severe and if not treated can progress to the extent that patients can have difficulty eating solid food. We have listed some of the common symptoms that patients experience with TMJ dysfunction.

  • Pain in the TMJ joint
  • Popping or clicking sounds while moving your jaw
  • Locking of the jaw in an open position
  • Muscle spasms around the jaw and side of the neck and head region
  • Persistent Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Causes of TMJ Misalignment
TMJ Treatment Etobicoke

Major causes of TMJ include irritation of jaw muscle due to disk displacement, arthritis or other jaw disorders. Physiotherapy is the first line of treatment for TMJ dysfunction and pain relief.

We have listed a few of the TMJ physiotherapy treatment plans. These may vary depending on your condition and severity of the dysfunction and pain. Sometimes a combination of therapies may be prescribed depending on your symptoms.

Trauma due to accident can result in hypermobility or stiffness of the TMJ joints. The unequal movement leaves the joint more prone to wear and tear resulting in an extremely painful condition.

If you have an immobile TMJ joint, usually a result of some physical trauma that has resulted in stiffness, then your physiotherapist will use manual therapy techniques to get the immobile TMJ to move properly. They will work with you and will suggest stretching exercises that will help you in improving the range of your jaw’s motion.

TMJ can be damaged due to grinding and clenching of the jaw muscles while you sleep. It can result in joint or disc injury as well as a muscle spasm.

Physiotherapists at Etobicoke Physiotherapy are experts at understanding the muscles of your TMJ. In the assessment process, they will look for muscle spasms that are not allowing your TMJ to recover. They may then prescribe manual therapy to reduce muscle spasms and improve joint alignment and movement. This will reduce the pain and discomfort significantly.

Some patients have hypermobile TMJ joints resulting in a painful condition. Your physiotherapist will be able to recognize this and will suggest exercises that will help in strengthening the weak muscles and improvement of your natural jaw movement patterns.

The muscles that control the jaw are connected to your upper neck and sometimes people injure their TMJ by incorrect sitting postures. Also, biting large or hard food particles or by chewing on one side of the mouth you can easily injure your TMJ.

Sometimes incorrect head posture while sitting for long hours can lead to TMJ dysfunction. We teach our patients proper postures to improve their condition. Our physiotherapists will also make suggestions for how to set up your workstation or car for proper body posture to alleviate TMJ pain.
