LYMPHEDEMA CLINIC ETOBICOKE
We offer one-on-one treatment with our physiotherapist who is certified to treat lymphedema in Etobicoke to make the situation better and improve quality of life.
Lymphedema is the swelling of body parts, most commonly of arms or legs, due to an accumulation of lymphatic fluid. Symptoms of lymphedema include swelling/increased limb size, feeling of heaviness, tingling, discomfort or pain and decreased range of motion. The condition may worsen without treatment. The affected limb can become hardened and there is an increased risk of infection. Early intervention will result in a better prognosis. It is therefore critical to recognize the symptoms of lymphedema and start early treatment.
HOW IS LYMPHEDEMA TREATED?
Lymphedema is treated by a physiotherapist certified in Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This therapy involves a technique called Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to help the movement of the fluid that has collected (eg. in the arm /leg). This stimulates and improves the efficiency of the lymphatic system and helps with comfort and mobility.
Compression bandages help decrease the size and soften the area. The management may be combined with compression garments, exercises, learning self-massage and self-care. Our physiotherapist is Assistive Devices Program (ADP) certified for compression garments. ADP is a government-funded program where the government covers 75% of the cost of the compression garments.
At Etobicoke Physiotherapy we have designed a one-on-one treatment for an hour with our physiotherapist who is certified to treat lymphedema. Treatment of lymphedema does not cure the condition but it can make the situation considerably better and improve quality of life. If you or someone you know has questions please call us, we are happy to help.
